MONTANA-For the fourth straight year, Montana’s workplace safety has improved, while injury and illness rates have declined. The annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses conducted by the Department of Labor & Industry’s Data Management Unit showed that private industry workplaces in Montana have reported an incidence rate of 4.2 injury and illness cases per hundred full-time workers in 2016. The 2015 incidence rate was 4.3 cases per hundred full-time workers.
“Every day Montanans go to work and strengthen our local economies,” said Labor & Industry Commissioner Galen Hollenbaugh. “Our goal is to make sure the workforce comes home safely after their shift ends. We still have work to do, but through continued education and training our injury and illness rates have declined for the fourth straight year.”
Montana’s incidence rate of injuries and illnesses varied by major industry division in 2016. It ranged from a high of 5.4 cases per hundred full-time Manufacturing workers to 0.7 cases per hundred full-time Finance and insurance workers.
Incidence rates that saw significant differences were the in the Arts, entertainment & recreation industry, which decreased to 1.4 in 2016 from 4.0 in 2015. The Educational services industry also decreased to 1.5 from 2.9 injuries and illnesses per 100 full time workers, in 2015.
Employers in Montana reported a total of 14,300 recordable injuries and illnesses in 2016. There were 14,400 injuries and illnesses during 2015. Six thousand two hundred of the injuries and illnesses occurring in Montana in 2016 were serious enough to require recuperation away from work, transfer from or restricted duties at work, or both.
The Data Management Unit of the Montana Department of Labor & Industry conducts the annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The survey estimates the number and incidence rates of workplace injuries and illnesses from records kept by private industry employers. These records show the year’s injury and illness experience. Injuries and illnesses are reported when they result in lost work time, medical treatment other than first aid, loss of consciousness, restriction of work or motion, or require a transfer to another job.
